Cancer is metastasizing to the bone marrow, not to the bone: time to change the paradigm (literature review)

P.O. Korol, M.M. Tkachenko

Abstract

The review considers modern ideas about the concept of bony malignant metastasis (bone marrow). Bone marrow metastases are an early form of skeletal metastases for malignant tumors. The use of early systemic targeted therapy in these cases may prevent the development of bone metastases. The terminological interpretation is more correct: “metastases in the bone marrow” instead of “metastases in the bone”. There is a need to revise the current technology of indirect radiation imaging and use of modern diagnostic methods for this purpose, such as 18F FDG-PET/CT, reflecting the degree of aggressiveness of the tumor process, providing a personalized assessment of the spread of the tumor process and aimed at effective treatment and optimization of the clinical prognosis of the disease.
