Abstract

The aim of this research is to study the efficiency of polymerase chain reaction for diagnosis of osteoarticular tuberculosis.
The efficiency of polymerase chain reaction in the diagnosis of osteoarticular tuberculosis was assessed on the basis of a clinical study of 85 patients, who were treated from 2005 till 2010 at the department of osteoarticular tuberculosis in Municipal healthcare institution «Regional tuberculosis hospital № 1» at Kharkiv regional state administration.
The first group (main one) included 60 (70.6 %) patients, whose diagnosis of specific newly diagnosed active tuberculosis of joints was confirmed by reliable laboratory and pathomorphological studies. The second group (control one) involved 25 (29.4 %) diagnostics patients.
For the study by polymerase chain reaction we used pathological material, which has been contacted with destruction focus: synovial fluid, or articular lavage, pus from periarticular abscess.
The analysis of results of this study revealed that the specificity of the polymerase chain reaction in osteoarticular tuberculosis is 92 %, sensitivity — 86.6 %, the total value of the test — 88.2 %. Linking these indicators, we received positive predictive value of 96 %. This allows us to conclude the feasibility of using the polymerase chain reaction in the arsenal of diagnostic tools in patients with osteoarticular tuberculosis.
