Modern Approach to Surgical Treatment of Osteogenesis Imperfecta

A.M. Zyma

Abstract

The article presents the modern trend of surgical treatment of pathological fractures and axial deformation of long bones in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta. The authors analyzed 33 surgical procedures in 12 patients with the use of blocking intramedullary nails in adolescents and adult patients, as well as «growing» intramedullary nails in children. Modern tactics of surgical treatment include thorough preoperative study of the structural and functional state of bone tissue, correction of it changes with calcium preparations and antiresorptives from group of bisphosphonates and carrying out surgeries (open reposition of bone fragments, simple and shortening segmental osteotomy) using locking intramedullary devices for osteosynthesis. Efficacy and prospectivity of this technique both from treatment and prevention positions were clearly established and objectively proven.
